As the Principal Flutist of the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra, a member of the Spring Wind Quintet of Chamber Music Hawaii and as a flute instructor at many institutions on the Islands, I have been a part of Hawaii's musical community since 1990. Since that time, I have taken part in thousands of concerts as an orchestral musician, chamber musician and soloist in Hawaii, Mainland United States and in Europe. I have served as a clinician both at home, overseas and with the US Military. I have continued my education, studying not only with some of the world's greatest flutists, but also with the world's best-known masters of posture, breathing and practice techniques.
Prior to coming to Hawaii, I played professional orchestras in the United States. I also took part in many world-famous summer music festivals in the United States and abroad. I studied at three major American Universities and completed four years of post-graduate degree work. I was a fellowship student and a teaching assistant over my six years of graduate study. Part of my post-graduate work included creating a young flutist's program, which was designed specifically to reach children using a mixture of teaching techniques including the Suzuki Method. On a sabbitical leave from the Honolulu Symphony, I did an additional year of post- graduate work in England.
In my teaching, I incorporate all the elements of my education so that my students have the benefit of learning much more than only flute technique. Developing a person into a good flutist means that he or she must understand how critical posture and breathing are to the production of flute sound. Also, a student must learn to practice with efficiency because it effects playing results in the short term and determines how well and how quickly a student will improve in the long term. The benefit to you as my student, is that I will pass on to you all that I know, enabling you to learn and improve quickly.
I have spent my lifetime finding the way to become the best flutist and teacher I can be. Through my teaching, I can inspire improvement in anyone at any level.
